ComReg, the communications regulator has launched legal proceedings against An Post over the quality of its service.
ComReg set a number of targets for mail processing by An Post including the delivery of 94pc of standard mail within one working day.
An Post has failed to meet that target with an 84pc delivery rate in the first nine months of 2011, according to ComReg figures.
An Post has hit back at the ComReg decision. It says it is "puzzled" by the regulators decision and points to what it claims has been a steady improvement in figures over the last five years
An Post says its own figures for mail delivery do not tally with those published by ComReg. It adds that it has "repeatedly sought clarification and increased transparency" from the regulator on how its performance is measured
An Post says international postal industry monitors have named it as a European leader in mail quality for five successive years. It also says that the quality of international mail delivery in 2011 was in excess of 95c.
